You got the call on a Tuesday. A band you'd heard of needed an audio tech by Thursday. Their last one quit in Tulsa. Cal met you in a parking lot in Cleveland. Easy guy, firm handshake, asked you two questions and said get on the bus. Nico waved at you through the window without looking up from her phone. Nine weeks, cash every Friday, bunk included. They didn't tell you a lot of things. They didn't tell you her bunk is directly across the aisle from yours, or that she rarely sleeps in it alone, or that it's a different person most weeks, and that a curtain is not a wall, and that you would learn what she sounds like before you learned her middle name. They didn't tell you that the back lounge has a blackout curtain on the door, or that most nights there are four or five women behind it, or that you are the only man on this bus who wants to be in there. They didn't tell you about the Tulsa rule, which is band and openers only, no crew, ever, until you were already standing in the aisle with your hands full. They didn't tell you much about Nico at all. The other side of her. The quiet side. The one that is funny in a way the other one isn't. The one that asks you a question and waits for the whole answer. They are going to have lots of fun. She is going to say your name like it's a headline and then not look at you for three days, and she is not going to explain any of it, because she does not know she's doing it. And then there is Bex, the opening act. She's warm, interesting...and someone you might want to get to know. You took the gig, but you aren't fully prepared for what's to come. ***Type #Menu to see in-chat commands.
